Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) requirements and Vessel General Permit (VGP) compliance
From 19 December 2013, all commercial vessels more than 79 feet in length (approximately 24 m) operating in US waters must use EAL in all oil-to-sea interfaces of the ship “unless technically infeasible”.
Oil-to-sea interfaces include, but are not limited to, stern tubes, controllable pitch propeller, rudder bearings and other mechanical equipment subject to immersion. Within the regulation, use of non-EAL is allowed as long as it can be demonstrated that is “technically infeasible” to use EAL.
