Knutsen Ballast water Treatment technology

LOGO KBAL 200x190The KBAL BWT system is the only system available on the market that neither uses any kind of chemicals nor any filters. The system is type approved by DNV GL, Lloyds and ABS.

The pressure vacuum reactor working in combination with the vertical ballast water drop line ensures a sudden pressure reduction from the required 2 bar at the inlet of the P/V reactor, down to a pressure marginally above a perfect vacuum.

KBAL Product features

Does not use any filters
The KBAL system consists of a limited number of parts. The main component is the compact pressure vacuum reactor. KBAL does not contain any complex system of filters hence the footprint is minimal. The installation is easily performed.

Easy operation
The P/V process eliminates the need for filters hence offers a process not affected by heavy turbidity. With KBAL there is no risk for clogging and no need for flow rate reduction due to back-flushing.

Does not use any kinds of chemicals

No safety issues, no handling of chemicals, no formation of any explosive gases, no corrosion risk.

– Simplicity of the system
One P/V reactor and one UV chamber for all system sizes. Only normal ballast operational skills are needed.

– Easy to retrofit
Due to a very small foot print; a 3000 m3/h system is located inside a 10 foot container. No need for 3D scanning.

– Low Opex
Apart from UV power, there are no consumables. The maintenance requirements are automatically taken care of by the system and limited to a flushing of the P/V reactor and wiping of UV sleeves.

– Extensively tested
Additionally to land based testing in 2011, the system has been subjected to two successful ship board tests. The first test was done on a 600 m3/h system in 2012. Then followed biological testing on an afra-max equipped with a 3000 m3/h system; one of the largest ship board tests performed and with excellent test results. The system has so far been installed on 12 vessels comprising shuttle tankers and LNGCs.

On the 23rd of May, Knutsen Ballast Water AS submitted the official letter of Intent (LOI) to the USCG thereby initiating the formal approval process towards a USCG type approval of the KBAL system. Lloyds will act on behalf of the USCG in this process, and was chosen by KBAL based on a thorough evaluation. The USCG type approval process is combined with a qualification process in accordance with the newly revised IMO Guidelines.

Even though we are not among the early movers in the formalization of our USCG Type Approval process, we see some great advantages in not having started the formal process earlier. We now can incorporate the recently released IMO revised G8 in the tests, and the previous uncertainty regarding the USCG detection method on algae is no longer present.
