PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: The Corinth Canal is a 6,343m gorge linking the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs;
the ports of Isthmia and Poseidonia are at either end and occupy some 540m of the total
canal frontage.
Currents change approx each hour and the waterway is much effected by NW winds. Canal
depth 8 metres, width at bottom 21 metres and 24.6 metres at sea level. Max width of
transiting vessel is 18.3 metres and draft 7.2 metres. Headway below rail bridge is 58.8
metres and below road bridge 54 metres. Canal is lighted at night. Maximum speed of
vessels navigating the canal is 6 knots.
The Canal is operated by The New Company of the Corinth Canal, based at Isthmia
Corinthias, who will furnish tariffs upon request.
Pilot: Compulsory for all towed ships. Night pilotage compulsory for all ships over
100nrt.
Tidal range and flow: 0.6m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: NW’ly.
VHF: Ch 11.
Charts: 1600.
Restrictions: Acceptance is dependent upon width and depth:
Width 15.5-16.6m, draft 6.2m max; 15-15.5m, 6.6m; 14.5-15m, 6.8m; 14-14.5 m, 7.0m. In all
cases the maximum width is 18.3m, draft 7.2m.
Ship’s speeds not to exceed 6 knots during transit; upon entering/clearing the canal,
speeds should be reduced to a minimum to avoid damage to vessels berthed at Isthmia or
Poseidonia.
Night transits are made possible due to extensive natrium vapour lights.

Tugs: Compulsory for vessels over 800nrt, tugs supplied by the authority.
Bunkers/water/stores: Provisions: Can be supplied from Athens and Piraeus. Bunkering and
Water: Not available.
Transport: Nearest airport: Athens.
Working hours: The Canal Co work a 24hr day six days per week, but will close on Tuesdays
for maintenance from 0600-2000 hrs.
Developments: A marina complete with services and capable of accommodating 400 yachts
nearing completion. A study has been conducted into deepening and widening the canal.
