Large Govan shipyard crane snaps

An 80 tonne crane at a Govan shipyard has snapped while carrying out routine operations.
BAE Systems confirmed that three employees were involved in the incident which happened at the company's site on the Clyde at about 0800 BST.

Wartsila wins major retrofit order for oily water separators

Wartsila has received a major order from Swedish shipowner Laurin Maritime AB. The contract, signed in March 2008, calls for six Wartsila Senitec M1000 oily water separation units to be delivered in mid April 2008. The units will be retrofitted to six of the company’s vessels and will replace existing systems, thus upgrading their oily water treatment performance to market-leading standards. The order also includes six SolidPac units to handle solid residues.

California mulls new auxiliary engine fuel rules

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) will present new draft rules for ship auxiliary engines at a workshop this month, Bunkerworld has learned. Cleaner fuels all round for ships in California The current rules for distillate fuels were ruled illegal by a district court last year, and this decision was upheld by two appeals to a higher court, with the latest appeal rejected last month.

Workers at the Greek ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki are due to strike on May 8-9 as part of their protest against privatization plans. Genco snaps up Bocimar bulkers

NEW York-listed Genco Shipping and Trading has reportedly spent nearly $260m to purchase two panamax and a supramax vessels.
The deal involves the 74,500 dwt, 2007-built CMB Laetitia, the 76,588 dwt, 2007-built CMB Aurelie, and the 53,637 dwt, 2007-built CMB Yangtze, according to a report from London-based broker EA Gibson.
